The New Trend Of The Material Used In The Modern Book Design

Books are the most wonderful things in human's civilization for the amazing aroma of ink and silky papers. They memorize information and have became a symbol of the civilization. Thus, many factors such as materials and processes, ideas and art, appearance and content must be considered in the design of a book. Recently, with the persistent development of economy, the design level of books also goes higher and higher. Thus the role of materials played in the book design begins to be focused. Materials is a powerful design language since each of them plays as a aesthetic unit. Their various forms inject fresh blood into the book design and have become the base on which designers go further. Book materials are so important that the materials for a book must be selected and appraised more carefully for book materials are updated rapidly today. We can believe that the diversity of materials application will drive book design into a new development.To this aim, we must create materials in a novel level. The materials should be used and emphasised in the book design as a specialty aesthetic unit. The aesthetics of materials must be explored deeply. The combination of paper and non-paper, materials and process as well as materials and art should be fully considered. Through these, we can provide more opportunities for the development of book design.In this paper, based on the morphology evolution of book design, the book materials in all ages have been summarized. Through sorting out the diversity of book materials and investigating the performance of materials themselves, the texture of book materials has been analysed, the law of materials in book design has been illustrated, the importance of materials in book design has been revealed. From the view of materials, designers should be adept in discovering and ultilizing the beauty of materials as well as inosculating art and technologies into materials according to the content of books, which offers important concept for the development and innovation of book design.
