This thesis is aimed at applying politeness theories of pragmatics to the study of the translation of Hong Lou Meng. Politeness theories possess an important position in the pragmatic studies in relation with literary translation, adequate knowledge of relevant politeness theories as well as cultural and linguistic differences in politeness will lead to a deeper understanding of the original text and a more successful translation. The present paper offers a deep-going discussion of the cultural and linguistic differences in politeness between Chinese and English. As for the study of politeness in the translation of the novel, the thesis mainly focuses upon the uses of nominal phrases encoding the identification of persons and "face" expressions in the novel, both are typical politeness phenomena. The author attempts to discuss how translators are able to interpret the politeness phenomena in the SL and reproduce in the TL appropriately so as to achieve pragmatic equivalence in regard to linguistic factors, cultural factors and ideology of translators in their translation. The research of this thesis intends to offer a new perspective on and provide new methods to the study of the translation of Hong Lou Meng.
