Abstract Painting And Representational Painting From Perspective Of Field

Since the introduction of painting into China, painting language also changes from its single and rigid model to the diverse forms because of the changes of people's ideas. But during the process of development, as the saying"letting the arts have free expression"goes, there is a problem of which flower is most splendid, which lasts longer. Based on this, there is a hot discussion between abstract painting and representational painting. Some people think that representational painting is out of fashion; while others think that abstract painting is talking about nonsense and invaluable. There are others who predict the developing tendency of painting is representational or abstract painting, and they think these two types of painting repel each other. These are the urgent problems to solve. The solution is not only helpful for painters to understand these two types of arts deeply, but also helpful for painters to grasp their authoring language by which reflecting changes of times.The thesis starts from Bourdieu's theory about art field, objects on abstract oil painting and representational oil painting to analyze the question by following logical rules. The paper also bases on case investigation to distil personal experience into reason in order to analyze deeply about the problems lying in abstract painting and representational painting.Based on Bourdieu's theory about art field, we know that art is an independent field, from which Bourdieu's idea of field is raised. Field does not exist singly; it is influenced and restricted by the surroundings. Bourdieu divides this developing process into three stages: acquisition of art autonomy, the breathing space of dual structure, and the production of symbolic wealth. Art, as a single field, forms a series of rules that everybody going into it must obey. The high art field and advanced art field is quite different from common goods in determining rules, because businessmen only deal with those beneficial goods. Oppositely, high art does not care about the interest, but that the matter is valuable only when the society gives its significance or when this matter is obtained a certain reputation or status. Once an artist is highly valued in a high art field with good reputation and status, then accordingly, his works will be sold well.Different field rules have been reflected in both abstract oil painting and representational oil painting in concept & characteristics, composition of pictures, space, presentation, and aesthetics, etc. Due to these differences, some other differences also occur, such as difference choices of different painters, different evaluation of different audiences. Painters, in order to pursue their dreams and sublime their innermost belief, express themselves freely without caring more about the profit. With the painters'increasing fame in the art world, their works become worthy as well. Every development, whatever arts or society, is always in constant change and further intact and exclusive structure is impossible. Abstract oil painting and representational oil painting is the reflection of real life. They are interactive with each other, namely, abstract painting has some representational features and representational painting is mixed with abstract factors. They are mutually interdependent, mutually blended, mutually interactive and mutually influenced to develop diversely with more art glamour of painting, with more introduction of modern taste and visual experience so that the oil painting has more characters of modern times.
