During the years of the early twentieth century, the western culture and civilization, including many kinds of new concepts of historiography, was introduced into China one after another. As a result, Chinese feudal historiography went down the wind little by little. Which kind of historiography should be chosen and built in China? That is to say, the problem of modernization of Chinese historiography, it was a major problem which placed in front of Chinese scholars during the half of the twentieth century. So lots of historians mounted the stage of historiography, through hard exploration, they made gratifying achievements in historiography thought, historical methods and so on. Fu Si-nian was one of them.Fu was a famous historian who lived in a confliction between the Chinese and western historiography, Chinese feudal historiography and modern historiography. In the alteration of the modernization of Chinese feudal historiography, Fu played an important role. In adolescence, Fu had gotten a profound traditional culture. In the UN and Germany, he studied for six years. It could be said that he combined Chinese and western culture. He was deeply affected by Qian-Jia school, Hu Shi's pragmatism, evolution, Frank's historiography, new historiography school and so on. He had a deep grounding in historiography. After returning to China, he founded the Institute of History and Phi logy attached to the Academic Silica. He tried to pursue a scientific and objective historiography. He paid great attention to collect and classify historical data, and advocated to broaden the scope of historical data. He purposed a disputed slogan: Historiography is equal to historical data. He determined to establish scientific and orthodoxy oriental studies in China. His achievements were that he integrated Chinese and western culture, adopted scientific historical research methods, broadened the scope of historical data, founded the Institute of History and Phi logy, trained lots of recruits, conducted collective research, made outstanding contributions to excavating the ruins of Yin, classifying the Ming and Qing archives and so on. He promoted the further research of Chinese Ming and Qing, archives, archeology and so on. At the same time, it prepared the conditions for the establishment and growth of Marxist historiography.But in discussing the historians of the twentieth century, some praised Fu, some criticized him, especially his slogan, Historiography is equal to historical data, has always been the focus of the study. Until today, the view about it has always been unable to reach an agreement.The thesis will study objectively Fu's academic work, biography, and other related files, analysises Fu comprehensively and deeply, and restore Fu so that people can understand Fu truly.The thesis includes five parts. First, the preamble, which mainly discusses the significance and value of the selection of the thesis, reviews the academic history, defines the contents, and emphasizes difficulties and innovations. Second, the social and academic background in which Fu's historiography thought formed. Which introduces Fu briefly, analysises the social and academic background in which Fu's historiography thought formed, and then analysises a few historiography schools or theories which influences Fu deeply. Third, Fu's historiography thought. The thesis analysises Fu's historical data, scientific and objective historiography thought and his research methods. Fourth, Fu's contributions to historiography and the deflects in his historiography thought. The thesis elaborates Fu's contributions to historiography, at the same time, analysises the deflects in his historiography thought. Fifth, the epilogue. The thesis comments Fu.
