Research On Stylistic Factors In Literary Creation

Though considered as being in relation to each other, literary stylistics and literary translation have rarely been taken into the actual translating process simultaneously. The common techniques translators used in translating are through their intuitive knowledge of stylistic features of the literary work they are working on. This is particularly true in the translation of literary work, which lacks in stylistic devices. Furthermore, stylistic study still has a long way to go before meeting our satisfaction in terms of literary translation studies. In order to make literary translation more scientific and practical, literary stylistics is introduced to translation studies.The thesis focuses on the identification of the style in the literary work. The author tries to solve the problem of how to recognize the style of source text by the way of literary stylistics. The object of the study is the style in literary work. The thesis probes into the replication of writer's style in order to make preparation for the literary translation. It intends to prove the importance of stylistic approach in style translation by penetrating into the stylistic factors of the writers and practically analyzing the work the Lord of the Rings.The thesis applies theory of stylistic factors proposed by Tong Qingbing as the theoretical framework. Based on concluding, absorbing, borrowing of the stylistics theory at home and aboard, Tong Qingbing developed the stylistic science by viewing the style as a system. He went deep into the factors which influence the writer's style and concludes nine stylistic factors. They are time spirits, national characteristics, class inclination, cultural tradition, literary tradition, life experiences, personality, innate talents and aesthetic qualities. He thinks that stylistic factors impress the writers to different extents. In order to replicate the style of the work, the translator has to investigate the writer's stylistic factors.The author takes the world-popular masterpiece the Lord of the Rings as an example to study. By investigating the stylistic factors of its writer Tolkien, the author probes into the style of the Lord of the Rings. The author collects and sorts out the materials of Tolkien's biography and stories, sorting out each factor and analyzing their influences on style, in order to recognize the style of the Lord of the Rings. The aim of doing so is to help the literary translation truly replicate the original style.Based on the Tong Qingbing's theory of stylistic factors and the case study on the Lord of the Rings, we are able to get the following findings.Firstly, it is a necessary step to investigate the work's style before literary translation. The stylistic factors have great impact on the writer's style. Before the literary translation, the translator has to probe into each factor influencing the writer's style, which is helpful to recognize the work's style. Thus, the translator could hold the style of the original text in all round way and the target texts would not be deviated from the spirit of its origin in literary translation.Secondly, each stylistic factor has different impact on the writer's style. The translator should investigate and research the stories and biography of the writer and sort out the writers' stylistic factors before translation in order to find out how each factor influences the writer's style and makes definition of the style of a particular work. In doing so, the translator would choose the appropriate words of the target language to replicate the style of the original texts.In all, the thesis researches one scope of the literary stylistics, the stylistic factors, and thus provides a practical method for the literary translation by studying on the concrete case. The study is able to help the translator to recognize the work's style in order to restore the original style in literary translation.
