Abstract is the indispensable part and brief summary of the thesis. One good abstract will provide the more invaluable information and arouse the readers'interest. Since English is the international language, so the English abstract has become the main channel for international communities. What's more, domestically every student has to write an English abstract in his thesis.English abstract has its own characters as a special text type. The textual metafunction proposed by Halliday is the way how people organize the information when using the languages. And the thematic progression is the important way to perform the textual function. So in some degree the type of thematic progression employed in the abstract determines the quality of the abstract. With the basis of Xu Shenghuan's seven logical semantic relations and the six ---thematic progression model by Huang Guowen, the thesis studies the thematic progression patterns of forty English abstracts written by Chinese Doctors majoring in Arts, Science, Engineering, and Administration respectively. These data are randomly chosen from China Doctor's Theses Full-Text Database (CDFD).The result analysis shows that group two (Doctors majoring in Science) prefers the parallel progression, while the continuous progression is the preferred TP patter in group one (Doctors majoring in Arts), group three (Doctors majoring in Engineering) and group four (Doctors majoring in Administration). In the four groups, the tendencies of the sequences of TP patterns are different from each other.According to the comparative study of TP patterns, the theories of TP patterns are enriched, at the same time it will help the students writing the English abstracts of papers. |
