| Primitive and dignified, splendid and magnified, exquisite decorative traditional dwellings represent the glory and wealth of Shanxi business, especially the notable Shanxi merchandises courtyard. Standing in the spectacular courtyard, the exquisite craftsmanship tile carving artworks which show originality, ingenuity can be seen everywhere, although eroded by the relentless years, they are still vivid and shining as though still indulged in the glorious history. However, in this global integration ages, rebar, concrete, glass curtain wall and asphalt road are increasingly filled with people's living space, only leaving antique courtyard alone just against the grain. Definitely, the traditional tile carving craftsmanship is disappearing as well. Are these exquisite artworks only waiting to die? Is there any usefulness of them to use in the modern architectural decoration field? Are there any appropriate ways to make it transform from antique to modern and glorious once more? These are the problems that needed to be solved urgently.QuanJin Guilding Hall in Taiyuan (Shanxi Province) is an established case which applies tile carving in modern architecture. Therefore, analyzing and summarizing its successful experience is meaningful to the transformation of traditional tile carving.The researching method of this thesis is on the spot investigation. The author made a thoroughly research of traditional dwellings in Shanxi especially the QuanJin Guilding Hall and Shanxi merchandises courtyard, investigated audience and interviewed designer of QuanJin Guilding Hall. Based on these first hand data and information, this thesis addressed the original background, design orientation, especially the application form, the designing theme and styling of tile carving, it strives to provide valuable inspiration and useful reference to the extension of modern city development and architectural design, it is of great value to handle the relationship between traditional elements and modern architecture.
