Hemingway won the Nobel Prize in 1954 and is regarded as a literary giant. Though many scholars have studied literature from the perspective of ethical literary criticism, few of them have researched on The Sun Also Rises with ethical literary criticism. This thesis will analyze the complicated ethical relationships in The Sun Also Rises. The purpose of the study is to deconstruct the life style of the "Lost Generation", interpret their ethical values and illustrate Hemingway's moral intention and deep ethical significance reflected in the novel. The author tries to bring some ethical inspiration.Ethical literary criticism is an approach to literary criticism developed on the basis of the introduction of ethical methods and the assimilation of them into the texture of literary critical methods, and it is Professor Nie Zhenzhao's great efforts to bring back the ethical values of literature. This thesis includes four chapters. Chapter One mainly explores the background of the study, gives a brief introduction to Ernest Hemingway's life and works and points out the significance of the study. Chapter Two discusses the theoretical basis. This chapter illustrates the theoretical basis of research-ethical literary criticism, including the origin, significance, methodology and the validity of applying the theory to the literature studies. The author of the thesis focuses on the analysis of Hemingway's ethical ideas reflected in The Sun Also Rises in Chapter Three, including the relationships between human-oneself, human-human, human-religion, and human-nature. The last chapter is the conclusion. The author of the thesis points out that the so-called "Lost Generation" are making efforts to build up the new ethical value system, so they are not lost at all.In a word, the author of the thesis thinks Hemingway embodied ethical and moral values in his novel. We can feel his strong sense of social responsibility and his efforts and attempts to reconstruct an ethical coordinate, to seek the new ethical orders. He believed that people would get rid of the sense of being lost and purify their souls.
