The arts of three carvings",brick, wood, stone carving in Shanxi merchants houses, have unique geographical features and cultural connotations. As the model of three carvings", stone artifacts of Changjia manor in Yuci which has the exquisite carving style, rich patterns of content and unique cultural backgrooud,plays a critical role in Shanxi merchants houses and is an important part of Chienese stone carving art.In this paper,the origin of decoration, art features,decorative techniques, aesthetic meanings and cultural connotations of stone artifacts of Changjia manor are studied and demonstrated in detail, which reveal that the beauty of the stone manor house is not for its scale but for grandeur, not for its work but for skillfulness,not for outside landsacpe but for inside charm, not for its form but for spirit.It lies in the unity of content and form, the unity of substance and spirit and the unity of function and aesthetics.The diverse decorative themes, the form of flexible patterns, the full application of the spacial decoration of stone artifacts of Changjia manor decorate the whole building beautifully,among which the most outstanding thing is the application of auspicious culture,applying auspicious meanings of plants, animals, people, objects, characters,etc.in decorative forms through the omission method, deformation method and modified method, using the literary techniques such as " homophony ", "obvious metaphor, " to reflect the thoughts of praying for blessing, whose decorative elements of stone reach the level of " a meanful picture, an auspicious meaning ".Besides, the rough forcefulness, layering density,proper combination of the true and the false, and fluid lines of the stone work are masterpieces of stone architecture of Qing Dynasty, which can be enjoyed as independent works of art.Its spacial layout shows strictness and orderlinesss.The North mansion and southern gardens are combined perfectly,whose bridges, corridors, halls, pavilions and other stone works are an integral whole.In terms of size, momentum, structure, layout, creating manner and cultural connatation, "Confucianism" are vividly exposed. The building manner of "the homony of Man and Nature,the following of natural law", reflects the essence and spirit of Chinese Confucianism.Stone artifacts of Changjia manor is a form of folk art and an important part of Chinese traditional culture. It is one of the crystallization of human wisdom of ideology and values. Also it is the rational social precipitation, which reflects not only the remains appearance of local culture, but also contains traditional Chinese aesthetics, the spirit of national consciousness and spiritual pursuit. At the same time, it represents the Chinese national spirit as it is rooted in the traditional Chinese culture,Confucianism and Taoism, and deeply rooted in the soil of laborer'life.Changjia manor is a treasure of Chinese folk culture.Its stone artifacts, carving fine, elegant styling, unique design style not only leave a lotof valuable information for folk art, but also provide a theoretical basis for the further study of stone carving of the Ming and Qing Dynasty.
