The Study On The Decorative Arts Of Interior And Furniture Of Kang Million Manor In Henan Province

Kang Million Manor is considered a classic example of the central plains feudal fortress style architecture. It was built between the end of Ming dynasty and the beginning of Qing dynasty. Inside the manor, there are a great number of relics (like buildings and furniture) from Ming and Qing dynasties. Such relics are characterized by distinct style and rich local flavor.This paper is based on the interior and furniture design in Kang Million Manor. According to the specific objects through fieldwork, the author investigates the decoration positions, their motifs and pattern, and the decorative methods. The paper is divided into four sections:the general information about Kang Million Manor; the interior decoration of the manor; the furniture decoration of the manor; and the protection and development of both decorative arts. The sections go as follows:First of all, the general information about Kang Million Manor. After the analysis of the historical background and current situation of the manor, the paper summarizes its natural and geographical background, historical and cultural background, and the current situation of the relics especially the architecture, the interior and furniture decoration.Then, the interior decoration of the manor:the interior decoration includes the door cover, the center of the window, and the plaque/couplets in the manor. The author summarizes and analyzes four aspects of their decorative style, such as the decorative characteristics, the decoration position, the motifs and pattern, and the decorative methods.Next, the furniture decoration of the manor:the characteristics of furniture decoration are analyzed through details such as the type and style of the furniture, the decorative position, motifs and pattern, and methods of the furniture.Last, the protection and development of both decorative arts:the paper gives account on the value of decorative arts in Kang Million Manor, both historical and artistic. Also it summarizes the current situation in the manor and proposes some suggestion about protection and development.This paper further improves the existing studies of Kang Million Manor, and fills the gap of the research on decorative arts in Kang Million Manor. Moreover, it provides valuable material for the interior and furniture research of Henan residential building in Ming and Qing dynasties. The research results can also be used as a reference to modern design.
