Incest is an important narrative motif in the literature works of ancient and modern in China and abroad.Since the ancient mythology, the motif of incest has found existence in writings, establishing itself as a rather popular one among humanistic literary. Both authors and readers exhibit no tiredom and keep attracted. The story also has been created in quite a few literature works by using motif of incest in the narrative literary in Britain. According to the common characteristics of these incest literature works each time, the motif-incest works have been classified Sexual-incest in British Renaissance, Grindingly-incest in 18th century, Amorous-incest in 18-19th century, by analying and exploring the development of these narration incest from different perspectives in distinct paradigms in sequence of historicity in each time. And also, we understand the significance and the value of the motif-incest by theme of the motif-incest works, containing introspection awakly and deeply for civilized alienation of British society, the confused life, spiritural crisis, and self-salvation of religious in Britain.The thsis is divided into three parts.Defining the concept of incest, and explaning the concepts of the motif and theme in comparative literature first, and then cellecting some materials of the research present situation in the study of motif-incest in preface. In the text, the thsis is divided into five parts. In the first chapter, it analyses some works which refer to the motif-incest in early British literature. Then according to archetypal criticism, the works which is from the Renaissance to 20th century is classified Sexual-Incest, Grindingly-Incest, and Amorous-Incest in the second chapter. In the third part, it raveals an survival dilemma and tragedies by showing the development of the male and female characters in Britian Industrial Revolution. Along with the development of techiniques in writing, the motif of incest has become a profound mode of architype as a form of Meraphor among many writings. Finally the author concerns the self-salvation of religious of British works which refers to the motif of incest in theological significance, and then analyzes the function of Christianity that maintains the moral and spiritual salvation in Britain.In summary, as one of the oldest and most primitive motifs in literature, incest story in English literature, not only reflects the history of British society in all aspects but also lets us have a more complete and profound understanding of British society. More importantly, from the development of incest story context, Britain writers'attitudes toward the incest motif literary become more and more subtle and complex: not only have a sense of unconscious identity toward original sin of incest, but also with infinite tolerance. The motif of incest has already broken the traditional meaning which pays attention to motif and transfers to methodology. This literary approach has a great instructive significance to writers from around the world and then has been used and developed by writers in different countries, then continually enriches and breakthroughs its creative type in literary history and thus provides nutrition and new inspiration for later writers.
