The present thesis makes a contrastive study of grammatical metaphor in English and Chinese speech discourses in light of Halliday's grammatical metaphor theory, focusing mainly on the ideational metaphor and the interpersonal metaphor. The author summarizes the differences and similarities in the use of grammatical metaphor in this type of discourse and accounts for such similarities and differences. The results of this study show that grammatical metaphor is widely used in both English and Chinese speech discourses and such use demonstrates great similarities. Meanwhile, there are also some differences, which may be ascribed to the different cultural backgrounds and social customs. This study not only enriches people's understanding of the theory of grammatical metaphor, but also helps expand the scope of contrastive study between English and Chinese. In addition, this study may be of some referential value for the writing and appreciation of speech texts as well as the language learning of English and Chinese.
