Reading is a very important part among the skills of English learning. For the requirement of English learning in nowadays, improving the students'ability in English reading is considered as one of the goals in colleges and universalities in China. So, the teaching of College English reading has been searching for a better way for the students'improvement in English.Based on the lexical cohesion theory of Halliday and Hasan, This paper analyzed the problems existing in the teaching of college English reading, and put forward some teaching models of English reading by employing the theory. In order to prove that the lexical cohesion theory has its practicability, this paper discussed mainly on its application to the teaching of college English reading. Through the experiment, the author got the first hand materials and a real data about the result of the students'English learning. Taking the lexical cohesion into teaching the college English reading is necessary. And at last, the writer made some suggestions on how to carry out the lexical cohesion based teaching models.The statistics of the two times tests show us that the college students had little consciousness of the textual structure, it may somehow affect their understanding of the whole text, especially about the general meaning of the reading material and the writer's purpose of the text. On the contrary, when the students grasp the lexical cohesion devices, they could get better understanding about the theme of the text. After a certain time practice with the new teaching model, students could get a comparative improvement in the reading comprehension.In a word, this paper intends to link the lexical cohesion theory with the teaching of college English reading, trying to prove that it is an efficient method to improve the students'ability in English reading.
