The present study aimed to test the two types of models by examing their different predictions on preview processing during reading: (1) whether readers attain high-level information, such as semantic information, from parafoveal; (2) whether lexical information extracted from parafoveal could exert influence on the processing of foveal.The experiment includes 56 participants. It is the mixed experimental design which is designed as 2(reduced, italic)×2(high frequency, low frequency)×2(semantic relation, nonsemantic relation). The present study employs ASL504 eye tracker to examine the influence of frequency for word and semantic relation.In experiment 1, we explored the high or low frequency can be extracted from the right of the fixation during the Chinese sentences reading. The results shows that on the total fixation duration, number of fixations, average fixation duration, number of gaze points, their main effect are significant. The difference of skipping probability of high and low frequency are significant.In experiment 2, the semantic relation between word(N) and word(N+1) are influenced the skipping. The results shows that on the total fixation duration, number of gaze points, their main effect are significant. The difference of skipping probability of the semantic relation are significant.These results suggested readers could obtain high-level information from parafoveal and process more than one word during Chinese sentence reading. Word skipping during reading is linked tightly to the amount of parafoveal processing that has occurred during the preceding fixation(s). I will do so mostly within the framework of the E-2 Reader model.
