In Ming Dynasty, a very important period in the history of the development of Chinese language, neoteric Chinese had entered a mature stage with many constituent elements being steady, which also means the beginning of the evolution from neoteric Chinese to modern Chinese. As a result, the vocabulary of this period plays an important role in the connecting link between the preceding and the following. So the research of word segmentation and frequency statistic on the corpus of Ming Dynasty will help us to know clearly the general picture of the word usage in the period. On one hand, such research can be used as a supplement for modern Chinese information processing; on the other hand, it is also the foundational work of studying the principles of neoteric Chinese word segmentation and developing Chinese automatic word segmentation system. This paper investigates the words from An Unofficial History of Wan Li Period. After setting up a closed corpus of five hundred thousand characters, we carry out the word segmentation and word frequency statistic. The works finished include the follow steps: (1) establishing a criterion for word segmentation; (2) getting a statistical table of An Unofficial History of Wan Li Period by segmenting the words and carrying out the statistic; (3) analyzing the result of word frequency statistic and describing diachronically the basic lexical feature of An Unofficial History of Wan Li Period; (4) finding out the general evolution and rules of Chinese words from Song Dynasty to modern time by comparing synchronically the word frequency table of An Unofficial History of Wan Li Period with that of Zhuzi's Language Category and the 8000 frequent words of Dictionary of Modern Chinese Words Frequency. There are six chapters in this paper with"criterion of word segmentation","practice of word segmentation","analysis of word frequency","feature of word-formation"and"comparision of word frequency table"as the research emphases respectively. Adopting the method of descriptive linguistics, contrastive linguistics and historical linguistics and under the guide of grammar theory, we try to achieve a breakthrough on the base of the former research, thus provide more reference for the research on the word dating and information processing of neoteric Chinese.
