With the improvement of people's life standard, film has become more and more popular in China. Now it is not only an entertainment in daily life but also a medium to convey culture. It needs the hard work of translators'to translate a film, and the first thing they need to work out is the film title. To make a comprehensive view in the field, it is easy to discover that good translations and bad ones are intermingled due to the lack of theory as guidance. The thesis holds the opinion that there should be a better theory as guidance although"Let a hundred schools of thoughts contend"is encouraged. The thesis discusses film title translation from the perspective of Skopostheorie. It is clear that a translated title must be able to attract as many audiences as possible provided that it does not go against the theme, content or target culture. Skopostheorie is able to rationalize title translation that does not necessarily follow traditional theories. The thesis makes a comparison between Skopostheorie and functional equivalence and Yan Fu's"Faithfulness, Expressiveness and Elegance", providing that Skopostheorie gives translator more freedom in film title translation. Besides, the reply by Nord to criticisms on Skopostheorie is introduced. Moreover, a model is built up according to Skopostheorie in the hope of providing a clear procedure for translators. The thesis also analyses the feasibility of Skopostheorie in terms of informative, cultural, aesthetic and vocative aspects.
