Harry Potter is a series of seven fantasy novels written by the English author J. K. Rowling. It was a children literature work, which has fantastic property melting with reality and fantasy. On its publication, the series has achieved an astonishing popularity and commercial success worldwide; the phenomenon of Harry Potter has swept the whole planet and brought new life back into book reading.Secondary world is a literary concept proposed by J.R.R.Tolkien, the author of The Lord of the Rings. According to Tolkien, it is hard to achieve a secondary world in fantasy literature; most fantastic worlds come out half-baked. The series of Harry Potter books convinces the readers in a tone of matter-of-fact that a wizarding world coexists with our own. Every facet of life in this world was painstakingly depicted. Such specific and vivid faithfulness of details are very rare and infrequent in fairy tale. Under the help of these details, the books gestate a wholly new life that is in possession of abundant animation, and a fantastic secondary world is created with a remarkable belief. The explosive global response to the series has made the books the subject of literary criticism. Up till now many critics have researched on the novels from different perspectives but few have paid attention to the description of details in the series of books, let alone the value of them in realizing a fantastic secondary world. This thesis attempts to interpret Harry Potter books from this perspective. We may realize that details virtually works as the foundation of the authenticity of the series of books. This thesis is devoted to an interpretation of J.K.Rowling's depiction of details entwined with time and place, aiming to break through the superficial recognition of details by bringing the cognitive development theory and reading psychology to analyze in depth the necessity of details in children stories, and further strengthen the significance of details in realizing a fantastic secondary world in the Harry Potter books. The Harry Potter series can be taken as an excellent example of informing the significance of details in realizing a fantastic secondary world. The present study hopes to shed light on the detail analyses of Harry Potter books to further help readers be aware of the significance of details in realizing a thoroughly imagined world.
