A Contrastive Study Of Cohesive Devices In Ah Q Zheng Zhuan And Its English Version And Translation Strategies

As an important device to realize coherence, cohesion in the text is the core of the text research. This study analyzed the novel Ah Q Zheng Zhuan and its English version translated by Yang Hsien-yi and Gladys Yang. Based on numerous examples, incorporating theories of text linguistics, contrastive linguistics and translation, it approaches the similarities and differences between Chinese and English cohesive relations, and inquires into the reasons for the differences. It systematically discusses translation strategies in accordance with the textual differences between the two languages. The purpose is to provide some reference suggestions for foreign language teaching and translation practice.The thesis consists of six parts:The Introduction briefly introduces the purpose and coverage of the study. And it also briefly comments on the significance of the thesis.Chapter 2 makes a brief review of the origin and development of cohesive theory, the relation between cohesion and coherence, including the review of the study of cohesion, contrastive linguistics and text linguistics both at home and abroad.Chapter 3 makes an introduction of Ah Q Zheng Zhuan and its English version.Chapter 4 is a contrastive study of cohesive devices in Ah Q Zheng Zhuan and its English version. A comparative survey on the five cohesive devices will be unfolded. The contrastive features of each cohesive device will be generally probed into. Hypotaxis and parataxis are discussed in this chapter.Chapter 5 attempts to probe into the implication on translation practice, and translation strategies concerning the effective management of cohesive devices.Chapter 6 makes a brief review of the main points of the thesis, points out that there still needs future study in this field.The originality lies in probing into the similarities and differences of cohesive devices between Chinese and English text and the conversion strategies in the translation process through comparing and analyzing the Chinese original and its English translation of a certain novel.
