The sentence pattern"taking A as B", one with a long history, still has great vitality in Modern Chinese. But the studies on it mainly focus on Old Chinese sentence pattern, one of whose purposes is to analyze how the modern polysyllable verb"以为"develops from this sentence pattern, leaving few studies on the Modern Chinese pattern. The present thesis mainly discusses the Modern Chinese pattern"taking A as B"omnidirectionally, multi-perspectively and deeply and its diachronic development as well, expecting a dynamic and systematic exploration and grasping of its development and present using actuality.The introduction part shows the writing background, purpose, range and its theory and research methods as well.A comprehensive study on the modern Chinese pattern"taking A as B"comes into the following three chapters from the angles of syntax, semantics and pragmatics respectively. From syntax, the thesis analyzes the syntactic function, its constitution of A and B and main syntactic categories of this sentence pattern. From semantics, the study focuses on its semantic categories, the choice and limitation of sentence meaning on the choice and limitation of A and B. From pragmatics, the stylistic flavor of this sentence pattern draws our attention, with an analysis of the application of this structure in the headlines, putting forward that"以"employs the function of highlighting A.The fifth chapter, from perspective of cognition, analyzes the integrated syntactic meaning of this sentence pattern, explaining its existence reasons and the differences from other related sentence patterns.The sixth part probes into the development and significance of this sentence pattern diachronically.The last part comes to a natural conclusion about the grammatical function of this sentence pattern and summarizes its significance.
