Regret is one of the most popular mood everyday conversation mentioned. It is a kind of negative emotional experience on the premise ofcomparisontriggered by counterfactual thinking.Self-accusation is the internal cause of its production, with motivationand behavior to change the status quo.Regret is a kind of cognitive emotion, and it is the product that individuals evaluate their own experience of adverse events.According to the emotional cognitive theory, the belief, explanation and evaluation to the trigger event is the more direct cause of emotional and behavioral responses. So to understand people's perception and explanation of the regret event, namely the attribution, playing a vital role to understand the regret and recognize the self.Studies have shown that the way of ascribing in regret is the internal attribution, namely self attribution.Individuals made the wrong decisions for their own reasons and blamed themselves.Warmth and competence are the basic dimensions to determine others and self-presentation.Self concept involves the warmth and competence. The basic dimensions play an important role in the self judgment. Therefore, this study tried to use the warmth and competence as tools to explain attribution content. In this study,we focus on the content of attribution in regret, which the individuals accusing his wrong decision of lack of competence or warmth? In addition, are there differences in the content of attribution between the short term and long term due to the individual's different perception of temporal self?Because situation will affect the regret,in the different field of regret-interpersonal and intrapersonal, will individuals' attribution content differ?Besides, will differentattribution content influence regret intensity? Is this influence regulatedby the length of time, regret situation and personalitytraits? This study will exploreregret attribution on the fundamental dimensions of social cognitionas well as the influence of different attribution and personality features for regret intensity when given regret events and attribution. To explore regret attribution, for reasons of avoiding tedious and inaccurate research,we'll be the first to study which personality features relateto the content of regret. It is study 1.Study 1 used the questionnaires to explore the traits related to regret reasons, and select words as materials for the study 2.Ask subjects to assesswhich personality featuresare the cause of regret.43negative words were selected. There were significant differences between the negative and positive words contactingwith regretcontent, and the negative wordsabout competence closer linked with regretcontent.Didn't get positive words.Study 2 used self-report method to study regret attribution on the fundamental dimensions of social cognitionin the life.Adopting 2(time:long vs short)x2(field:intrapersonalvsinterpersonal)x2(dimension:competence vs warmth)within-subjectsdesign.Ask subjects to write down short-term self,short-term interpersonal,long-term self,long-term interpersonal regret event each one, then selected from the given words about warmth and competence to express theirreasons of regret. Results showed that dimension's main effect was significant, wordsabout competence selectedmore than the words about warmth. And the interaction of time X dimension was marginalsignificant. The number of chosen words about competence in long-time significantly greater than short-term,and there were no significant differences in the number of chosen words about warmth. The interaction of field X dimension was also significant. In the field of self, the wordsabout competence selectedwere significantly more than the words about warmth; In the field of interpersonal, individuals chose the warmth words significantly more than the competence words.Study 3 researched the impacts of different dimension of attribution in the regret events on regret intensity by situational simulation in laboratory situation, and explored the rolestime, field and individuals' warmth and competence played.Adopting 2(time:long vs short)x2(field:intrapersonalvsinterpersonal)x 3(dimension:competence vs warmth vs none)x2(trait:competence vs warmth)mixed design.Ask participants evaluate their warmth and competence, and then to imagine fully and evaluate the degree of regret in a given story situation. Results showed that dimension's main effect was not significant and field's and time's main effectswere significant.Regret intensity in the interpersonal areas significantly greater than self field and in the long time significantly greater than short time.Dimensions and qualities did not predict regret degree; There was a significant interaction between warm attribution and competent qualities. The competent trait played a moderating part between warm attribution and interpersonal regretand short-term regret.Comprehensively, the following were conclusions:(1)On the content, the wordsabout competence closer contacted with regret content; On the titer, negative traits closer related with regret content.(2)Compared with short-term,more people regretted due to their own incompetence and nearly equal people regretted due to insufficient warmth in thelong-term.In the field of self, people regretted more due to their own incompetence, and in the field of interpersonal, due to their own lack of warmth; In general,no matter in what kind of event, people were more inclined to regret due to insufficient competence.(3)Regret field and time affect the degree of regret.Regret intensity in the interpersonal areas significantly greater than self field and in the long time significantly greater than short time. But the both can not moderate the impact of regret reason on intensity.Regret reason and personality traits had no effect alone on the degree of regret. But the competent trait played a moderating part between warm attribution and interpersonal regret and short-term regret.
