The thesis makes a study of the modern media representation on screen and TV of Yang Yuhuan, a concubine of the Emperor Minghuang of the Tang dynasty, by analysing the evolution, the deconstruction and the selection of the raw materials about Yang Yuhuan, as well as the national style and the traits of the times revealed in movies and TV works. The adaptation of the original story for the movie and TV is an extension of the historical and folk narratives, a re-interpretation and conversion of the story about Yang Yuhuan in history records, literature and folklore. The film and TV works have not only retained the traditional and national aesthetic features but have also been permeated with the changing spirit of the masses of the day. Compared with the creative techniques of traditional novels and dramas, the film and TV works are more evocative of the modern times. In terms of characterization, recreation of the plays, etc.,they show a kind of aesthetical needs and cultural mentality of contemporary people in interpreting Yang Yuhuan as a historical figure.
