Semantic And Rhetoric Analysis Of The Color Word "Hong" And Words Including "Hong"

This thesis analyzed the color word "Hong" and words including "Hong" in the aspects of the semantic features, the implicity and explicity of color-denoting sememe, meaning formation through rhetoric and semantic features of its synonyms from the angle of semantics and rhetoric. Through the analysis of "Hong" and illustrating the relationship between the change of meaning and function of rhetoric on the change of meanings, the paper attempted to prove that the color-denoting sememe would be weaker or removed and produced other meanings except for denoting colors with the function of rhetoric. Therefore, it could be concluded that there exists close relationship between formation of Chinese lexical meaning and function of rhetoric and rhetoric is an important means in lexical meaning development.
