With the growing number of netizens and their increased enthusiasm in online discussions, a great deal of network hot words emerge on the platform of Internet. As a special kind of vocabulary deriving from the network language, to some extent, the network hot words has shifted from a "social dialect" into a "social common language". The network hot words is a striking social phenomenon and a realistic cultural existence, the C-E translation of which can not only introduce the Chinese Internet culture to the western readers, but can also help them to gain a better understanding of the contemporary China. Therefore, the translation of network hot words is an indispensable part in translation studies. To this end, this thesis intends to study its English translation from the perspective of relevance theory.According to relevance theory, the human communication is an ostensive-inferential process, during which both the speaker and the addressee are guided by the optimal relevance. And the relevance translation theory regards translation as a dual ostensive-inferential process. In translation, the translator plays a dual role who serves both as a reader of the source text and an author of the target text. To make the source text author's intentions and the reader's expectations meet, on the one hand, the translator should have an accurate interpreting of the source text author's intentions, and find the optimal relevance between the source text and its context; on the other hand, the translator should also pay attention to the target readers' cognitive abilities and reading expectations, and reproduce the source text author's intention to the target readers by adopting proper translation strategies and methods. In translating network hot words, based on making a distinction between the two basic concepts of network language and network hot words, this thesis first has a study on its characteristics and classification, and then makes an analysis on the process of network hot words translation from the perspective of relevance theory, and makes some suggestions on translation strategies and methods, as well as some points which should be paid attention to in translation. Through the case study of network hot words translation from the perspective of relevance theory, this thesis aims at demonstrating that relevance theory can be taken as a theoretical foundation for network hot words translation on the one hand, and exploring the translation strategies and methods for network hot words on the other hand.
