Both Chan Master Rujing and Chan Master Daoyuan are excellent Buddhist monks who have sought the Buddhism truth as Sakyamuni. In contemporary China, there's a thought to amalgamate three religions into one, while in Japan, the thought of combining"Shendao"and Buddhism has become common sense. What's more, both in China and Japan, the number of religion is increasing; people are often confused as a result of misunderstanding during the Information Age. In this situation, seeking the purity of Buddhism comes into great necessity as it supports the development of Buddhism. Then, this research aims to explore the important meaning of their Zen thought to the contemporary age. The research will also be the beginning of researching contemporary Buddhism. The research is mainly based on Master Rujing's Quotations of Chan Master Rujing and Tiantang yiluo lu, and Master Daoyuan's Zhengfayancang. Only by reading the books which are closest to them can we find out the truth. The purpose of that I only quote some content from their books is to keep the purity. Another reason is that there is little research about Chan Master Daoyuan.Quotations of Chan Master Rujing is the most important document to help us understand Rujing's thought. Apart from that, another document Tiantang yiluo lu, made up of"Tiantong Mountain Jingde Temple Rujing Chan Master xuyulu"and"Rusong chuanfa shamen daoyuanji".Rujing is a representative of"Caodong Chan"in the Song Dynasty. His theory has a far-reaching influence on the history of Chan. So it's meaningful to study Master Rujing's theory. After reading both Quotations of Chan Master Rujing and Tiantang yiluo lu, we can find that Master Rujing didn't intend to express much. In brief, Buddhism can't be expressed by words; it's just the nature itself. Therefore, all the articles were expressed in natural ways. So we can find that setting in meditation is the only way to comprehend the truth of Buddhism. If concentrated on distinguishing the words, we shall never get out from the puzzling world. Not to mention to find the truth. Master Daoyuan, different from Master Rujing, has his own works and lots of related explanation books. At the same time, there's a lot of research about Master Daoyuan. My research is too simple to be called as a good easy. But I shall never begin if I don't try.My research mainly focuses on Master Daoyuan's masterpiece Zhengfayancang to approach his thought. However, it has taken more time to go through it than Quotations of Chan Master Rujing, due to the enormous content and numerous elements of the former. Therefore, it's impossible to deal with the whole content.By reading Zhengfayancang generally, we can find that the content is abundant and the thoughts are quite deep. I have read it, but just quoted a small part. For one reason the content is too much, and for the other reason, there're many different ways of writing in the book to express the same thought. Master Daoyuan quoted ancient Buddhism maxims to demonstrate his own thoughts as the explanations in Zhengfayancang. As for bad examples, he quoted and remarked both other scholars and Monk Linjixi's words. There're a lot of catalogs, which can well represent Master Daoyuan's major thoughts. In a word, it suggests that the promotion of"shenxinxuedao"could achieve the realization of Buddhism truth."Shenxinxuedao"means reading Buddhist books unrestrained in exact words, in the meantime, concentrating on"zhiguandazuo"in Buddhism practice. Only by this way can we achieve supreme enlightenment. Both Master Daoyuan and Master Rujing's Buddhist theories seem to be unrestrained, so we can say they're the same. However, on the contrary, if we stick to the surfaces, then we could find everything between the two will be different. The majority of researchers place"xinchen tuoluo"and"shenxin tuoluo"as major problems, while both Master Daoyuan and Master Rujing hold the same viewpoint that too much attention to words will lead to deviation of Buddhism theory. In fact researches and discussions on the problem of words have deviated from the original intention of Buddhism, so people only fell into a puzzle. They criticized the mainstream of"linjizong"and the superficial thought of"three religions amalgamated into one". They searched for the purity of Buddhism, and finally attained spiritual essence. Buddhism has its own duty. The research I did is to promote Buddhism for both Master Daoyuan and Master Rujing are talented in aspiring for the purity Buddhism, which we have discussed above.Through the research above, let's discuss why Chan theory is necessary to the contemporary life. In my research, special attention is paid to understanding the truth of Buddhism. But the research would be superficial if it just compared their Buddhist theory. I have experienced the temple's situation and atmosphere at the actual place. Both the TianTong Temple and the YongPing Temple are located at the inconvenient suburb. At that time transportation facilities were poor. It is so great that Master Daoyuan risked his life to seek the truth. There is no doubt that Master Daoyuan's theory is integral. It's also clear that his own master Master Rujing is an excellent Buddhist monk.Even though excellent Buddhism monks like them have existed, it's doubtful whether their theories will be properly inherited as there're many monks who behaved differently from the Buddhist theory. Especially it's necessary for the related people to think about it. It's a question not only for religion, but also for the whole Buddhism world.Their theories are based on everyday life, and never stick to wording or phrasing. Even in today's Information Age, the fact that Buddhism theory has permeated everyday life hasn't and will never be changed as long as we live in the world. If we try to define it as a fixed thing, it will be separated from life. But if we can observe with this viewpoint that Buddhism is everyday life, it will become much easier to study the Buddhism. In this way, maybe we couldn't completely perceive the truth, but at least we can get out from the puzzling world more or less. Then, naturally, we will become rich in the spiritual world. As a conclusion, even in nowadays, the Buddhism, as life itself, is of great necessity.
