Since the 1970s of last century, linguists began to pay attention to a language phenomenon—discourse markers, but the researches were not rich and fruitful until 1980s. Among these researches, Halliday & Hasan (1976) analysed the discourse markers from the perspective of cohesion, and another linguist Schiffrin (1987) analyses the discourse markers from the perspective of syntactic-pragmatic in her book Discourse Markers. But Blakemore (1987) who is also a famous linguist employed the perspective of cognitive-pragmatics to analyse the discourse markers. By contrast, the research on Chinese discourse markers lags far behind compared with that on many other languages. One of the most active scholars in this field is Liao Qiuzhong. He (1986) carried out research from the perspective of syntactic and semantic. Within the framework of Relevance Theory, Ran Yongping (2000) payed his attention on the relevant constraints of Chinese discourse markers, and then explores their existential cognitive-pragmatic motivation. However, they do not probe into every kind of Chinese discourse markers.Based on Sperber and Wilson's Relevance Theory, Blakemore points out that the aim of employment of discourse markers is to reduce the hearer's processing efforts, and achieve optimal relevant effect. Therefore the communication goes on more successfully. Relevance Theory reveals both the cognitive and psychological existence basis of discourse markers and the constraint function of utterance interpretation, which provide psychological explanation for discourse markers. So, on the foundation of these former studies, the present study attempts to analyse the locutionary performative markers from the perspective of cognitive-pragmatic, and based on the relevance theory the thesis is conducted in a qualitative way. This study is of significance for the success of communication, language learning and language teaching. It also gives us some enlightenment about translation and interpretation.
