The Effect Of Baroque Music On The Creative Imagination: The ERP Evidence

Creative imagination is an important way to get creative products and the creative products with novelty and utility have great significance to humans. Prior research on creative imagination, Finke and his colleagues have studied a lot and to be recognized. Finke made a creative cognitive process of "generation to explore" model for explaining the cognitive process of creative imagination to provide a theoretical basis. However, studies have not been on the creative imagination to explain its relationship with the music. In this study, we use Baroque music and modern rock music as the music conditions to explore the influence of Baroque music on the creative imagination.In experiment 1 we selected 14 college students as subjects. The mode of appearance of music was inductive. Tasks were the creative imagination and reproductive imagination. We use of high time resolution of Technology (ERP) recording and analysis of both the brain when dynamic change process, in order to further reveal the creative novelty produced in the brain mechanism to provide direct evidence of brain mechanism. Behavioral data was found in Baroque music subjects completed creative imagination with the reaction time=4048.98±286.85ms, were tested in the rock music the creative imagination of the reaction time=4012.76±281.60ms that there is no significant differences. Baroque music has been tested by the creative imagination of creative product quantity (79.4%), in rock music creative imagine the number of products (76.5%), In Baroque music subjects imagine the number of creative products to be significantly more than in the rock music. It was found that in each condition, both tasks have emerged the early components N1 and P2. This showed the different stimuli in the early visual processing are the same mechanism. Creative imagination tasks:Baroque music and rock music, mainly in three different time windows:the first time window 300-580ms, significant difference wave amplitude of P300-580ms existed between baroque music and rock music. The result of dipole analysis was the difference wave mostly activated the left pulvinar nucleus. We believe that the stage is a "feature awareness" stage, aware of some unusual properties characteristic of things. The second time window 1000-1500ms, significant difference wave amplitude of P1000-1500ms existed between baroque music and rock music in right hemisphere. The result of dipole analysis was the difference wave mostly activated the right superior temporal gyrus. We believe that the stage is a "feature emerging" stage, but also the critical stage of the creative imagination. The third time window 2880-3000ms, significant difference wave amplitude of P2880-3000ms existed between baroque music and rock music. The result of dipole analysis was the difference wave mostly activated the left insula. We believe that the stage is a "feature integration" stage, the initial integration of the prototype of a new thing. Reproductive imagination tasks:significant difference wave amplitude of N1550-1700ms existed between baroque music and rock music. The result of dipole analysis was the difference wave mostly activated the left hemisphere parietal precuneus. We believe that Baroque music can be promoted us to get more detailed representation of the imagination.In experiment 2 we selected 12 college students as subjects. We believe that the stage is a "feature emerging" stage, but also the critical stage of the creative imagination. The third time window 2940-3060ms, significant difference wave amplitude of P2940-3060ms existed between baroque music and rock music. The result of dipole analysis was the difference wave mostly activated the right cingulate gyrus. We believe that the stage is a "feature integration" stage, the initial integration of the prototype of a new thing. Reproductive imagination tasks:significant difference wave amplitude of N1800-1950ms existed between baroque music and rock music. The result of dipole analysis was the difference wave mostly activated the right insula. We believe that Baroque music can promote the appearance of us to imagine more information.This study shows that for the behavioral data, Baroque music and rock music conditions were assessed with the creative imagination there was no significant difference in reaction time, and Baroque music in the creative subjects imagine the number of creative products to be significantly more than in the rock creative music creative imagination by the number of products, so that Baroque music indeed can promote the creative imagination. For the EEG data, with the presentation of two different music, Baroque music compared with rock music there are differences between three time windows, has evoked one positive ERP component in each time window, according to dipole localization of the brain Area, Baroque music can promote the creative imagination with the three components of the creative imagination, that is "perceived characteristics", "features emerging," and "feature integration".
