Expo 2010 Shanghai China, the first Expo staged in a developing country, the event attracted 246 participating countries and international organizations and 73 million visitors. Both figures are records in the history of Expos. Among so many pavilions, it is important to attract more foreign visitors by use of effective Chinese-English Translation of Introductions for those Shanghai Expo Chinese pavilions. The thesis studies the Chinese-English translation of Shanghai Expo pavilion introductions in a collection of introduction samples from official Website-Expo Shanghai On-line, adopting "the Economics of Language" theory of Andre Martinet, et al. The analysis does the conduct from three levels, lexical, syntactic and textual, combing qualitative and quantitative methods, based on the economy principle. The research questions are, firstly, how does the economy principle influence Chinese-English translation; secondly, how to translate the like introductions tending to be vocative texts under the guide of economy principle; finally, how do the Sino-foreign culture differences influence the Chinese-English translation in Shanghai expo pavilion introductions. Some computation and tests are carried out with the aid of AntConc to make sure the reliability of the research findings. The thesis shows that how to deal with the translation of pavilion introduction through two main strategies, which are deleting the redundant information and adding the assistant information. In order to make the translated texts more economical, we can delete redundant category nouns, modifiers and intensifies on the lexical level; the redundant grammatical units on the syntactic level; the repetition on the textual level. Meanwhile in consideration of cultural difference, such publicity materials also undertake the duties of cultural transmission. Thus we need to retain the culture-loaded words and quotations.
