Both illuminated by and based on the relevance theory of Sperber and Wilson, this thesis aims to analyze and elucidate the ostensive-inference process of typical English recall statements as well as the contextual effects of its writing strategies via both quantitative and qualitative analysis.This thesis first addresses recall statements as a kind of ostensive- inferential communication, classifies the strategies adopted, and then analyzes contextual effect of each writing strategy. Five strategies of English recall statement are analyzed:Denial, Evasion of Responsibility, Reducing Offensiveness of Event, Corrective Action, and Mortification. Finally, this thesis enunciates the selection of the recall statement context by Coca Cola as a case study.The findings in the study not only can be applied to practical business English writing, but also contribute to the teaching of Business English Reading.
