This paper is a translation report written after translating the full text of Ghost Forest from English to Chinese. The source text of this translation report belongs to literary texts, and this work is a special type of literary fiction—Chinese diaspora fiction. Many Chinese traditional cultural symbols appear in the fiction which require careful consideration by the translator to accurately convey these language symbols with strong national characteristics to readers.Another challenge is that there are rich characters in the fiction, the translator should treat those distinctive traits with caution to make the language style of the translation more suitable for the characters.Starting from Gutt’s Relevance Translation Theory, this paper, taking the typical translation cases of Ghost Forest as examples, makes a preliminary study and exploration of strategies and technical skills employed in the translation of Chinese diaspora literary works. In the theoretical framework of the application principles of Dual Ostensive-Inferential Communication and Contextual Assumptions in practical cases, this study aims to solve the problems of context and perspective transformation in translationThe study findings are as follows. In the dimension of cultural contextual assumptions, translation techniques such as domestication and annotation can be used for content such as culture-loaded words, hybrid words, and Chinese idioms that appear with ethnic and local language characteristics of the original text. When it comes to situational contextual assumptions, the transformation of time, space and characters in the text can be addressed by using translation techniques such as amplification and insertion. For the polysemy and metaphor that are frequently appearing in linguistic contextual assumptions, translating techniques such as free translation, metaphor conversion, and annotation can be adopted. In short, for the content where the reader and the author of the original text share a common cognitive context, strategies of literal translation can be adopted.Otherwise, those strategies of free translation should be adopted to supplement the missing information for the target language readers to achieve the purpose of communication.
