The Training And Evaluation Of "Suicide Gatekeeper" To College Students

Abstract/Summary:
Objective To select the "Suicidal Gatekeeper" in the college students, instruct the knowledge about prevention and intervention of suicide to Suicidal Gatekeeper, and evaluate the effect of training.Methods Recruit volunteers of Suicidal Gatekeeper in the experimental college, then drew out training plan and wrote training materials to train these people recruited. The content of training include knowledge of related suicidal, symptoms and performance of depression, warning signs of suicide, stress events, how to identify suicidal tendencies, how to communicate with people who have suicidal ideas, how to persuade people with psychological problems to accept the help, and so on. The participants were investigated three times by using the questionnaire, pre-training, one week after training and six months after training. The training group and control group observe students then wrote "practical ability Assessment Questionnaire". All students who were observed by the two groups were investigated by using "student health questionnaire", and then checked the consistency between the two groups. To assess the training process according to "gatekeeper training process evaluation questionnaires".Results1. Knowledge about warning signs, misunderstanding, assessment skills and knowledge on the evaluation of suicide were all improved after training. Among these, knowledge on suicidal warning signs was the most significantly improved, which score increased from 4.88 to 8.29, with 69.88% up, followed by the knowledge of suicidal assessment, which scores from 2.23 increased to 3.52 with 57.85% up. Score of misunderstanding knowledge increased from 5.96 to 8.63 (by 44.80%). The minimum increased knowledge was assessment skills, from 2.96 to 3.60 (by 21.62%). After six months, among these, the score of warning signs slightly decreased, the score of the knowledge of suicidal assessment and assessment skills were keeping, but the score of misunderstanding knowledge was back down to the level before training.2. Among knowledge of suicide prevention and control, awareness of obtain detailed plan about suicide and encourage them to tell their difficulties or suicidal thoughts were higher than pre-training. After six months, awareness of the whole society concern the problem of suicide raised, awareness of obtain detailed plan about suicide and encourage them to tell their difficulties or suicidal thoughts unchanged.3. After the training, the number of respondents who think if students had idea of suicide, we can directly ask, the most important thing is to listen in communication process and he had the skills to communication with suicide students increased significantly.4. To compare with student self-assessment results, the ability of gatekeeper was better than control group in identifying suicide risk factors, suicide characteristics about behavior, emotional and social, and stress events.5. Process evaluation shows that 95.0% students think the timing of training is appropriate, 85.0% think that content of Pocket book is very useful,70.0% think that the content of training should be increased, and 21.4% think that we should arrange some social practice.65.0% believe that the training to observe high-risk individuals has practical application from the characteristic of social or emotional.65.0% think that training methods is very good or good.Conclusion Through short-term training, knowledge of related-suicide and ability of identify high-risk individuals improved significantly. Because gatekeeper with knowledge and ability may have decreased along with time, we should regularly refresh training and call in gatekeeper to exchange information and experience. It can improve gatekeepers'ability of practice. Suicide gatekeeper training among college students is necessary and feasible, this approach of training can be gradually extended to any college student.
