English newspapers reading is an important way of learning English. It is also a very important resource of reading materials in CET4 and CET6 and TEM4 andTEM8 and Postgraduate English exam. And these articles in English newspaper are widely selected, which involve various topics and are difficult to read. Generally metaphor appears in these newspapers articles. According by, people has never stopped the steps in English reading research.From the 1960s, the vigorous development of cognitive psychology and psychological linguistics in reading research has taken new vigor into the study. The shift in linguistic research and psychological process studies had pushed the reading study onto a compelling height. And metaphor is one of the important ways in the cognitive linguistics which is based on experiences to analyze the discourse and text effectively.Metaphor has been studied with long history. But, more people stayed in the stage of the construal to the words and the sentences. Few studies its discourse function. Halliday (1985), in the framework of grammatical metaphor, proposed ideational metaphor, interpersonal metaphor and textual metaphor, whose discourse metaphor actually refers to the "discourse grammar metaphor", but he did not work out the clear definition. Martin (1992:404), after the Halliday, uses "textual metaphor" for this term formally and understands it as that the discourse is interpreted as some material which is namely a material part of social realization. This metaphor includes both the Halliday's discourse grammar metaphor and Lakoff s conceptual metaphor.In recent years, Liao Mei-zhen a famous scholar in china, has done a comprehensive and systematic research the textual function of metaphor. His textual function of metaphor research includes three aspects:organization relationship between the title and the body of text; metaphor changes and textual organization extent; Metaphor discourse consistency and skipping.This paper based on Liao Meizhen's study of textual function of metaphor, constructs a comparative study of a number of kind of articles selected from China Daily and Newsweek, to find out a set of fast and effective reading methods.
