On The Reproduction Of Verbal Humor In The English Version Of Fortress Besieged Under The Framework Of Adaptation Theory

The application of verbal humor could add artistic effects and appreciation values to literary works. In present years, the translation of verbal humor has gained more and more attention from both the translation theorists and translators and certain amount of researches on it have already been conducted.However, there is few comprehensive, persuasive and authoritative theoretical outcome could be found in this field. Therefore, the first and foremost task for this dissertation is to explore a comprehensive and more compatible theoretical framework for the translation of verbal humor.This dissertation has explored and fixed Verschueren's Adaptation Theory as the guidance to interpret and testify the cases of verbal humor translation, thus endeavors to finally reach the conclusion that Adaptation Theory is adequate and feasible in guiding and interpreting the translation of verbal humor, especially the whole translation process of it.Therefore, the second task for this dissertation is taking some representative cases of verbal humor translation in Fortress Besiege as the main object for study under the framework of Adaptation Theory thus to prove that Adaptation Theory could function well in guiding and interpreting the process of reproducing verbal humor in Weicheng.Moreover, this dissertation will only focus on studying the translators' adaptation to communicative context and adaptation to structural objects of the source text in verbal humor translation of Weicheng thus to reproduce the humorous effects in the target text.Consequently, this dissertation will finally reach the following conclusion that Adaptation Theory is a feasible and powerful pragmatic theory which could be applied to not only the translation of verbal humor but also the translation in general.
