Toni Morrison is a distinguished contemporary novelist in the 20th century American literary history. All her novels deal with African American characters and communities. Exploring the entire cycle of human life in a spiritual context, her novels have obtained universal significance. Beloved, published in 1987, is written by Toni Morrison, the first black American woman writer to win the Nobel Prize for literature. The trauma and the horror left by slavery are painful. It is difficult for writers and the slave narratives in recounting the horror of their experiences. Morrison expected Beloved to be the least read of all her books, but she authorizes the narrator to repeat that the past should not be forgotten. Such contradiction is well-solved by her through the use of symbolism. This thesis is focused on analyzing the symbols used in the work and how these symbols help to express the themes. Toni Morrison skillfully uses symbolism in the scars, identities of Beloved and Denver, colors, and numbers to express her multi-faceted themes. It is the key point to understand the novel by knowing the symbolic implications of these images first.Toni Morrison contributes a real monumental work in American literature. It is obvious that Toni Morrison is qualified and worthy of her achieved recognition.
