A Investigation On "A₁+A₂" Combination

In modern Chinese, the form and meaning of some single and double syllables are closely related, such as"Hei—An—Hei'an."The question of single and double syllables is concerning about syllables from the perspective of Rhythm, and related with the distinction between the meaning of synonyms on the level of meaning, both of which are the focus of modern Chinese research.Some scholars have already conducted researches on single and double syllables of nouns and verbs, but few researches on single and double syllables of adjectives. As a result, this thesis probes on 176 selected"A1+A2"groups from both diachronic and synchronic perspectives, and provides explanation of the results.This thesis is composed of five chapters.The first chapter explains the range of topics, significance,the history and current status of the study.In the second chapter, we outlines the common points and difference on semantics and function between"A1+A2", the single and double syllables. Also, the paper summeries the semantic bias of"A1+A2,"and the capabilities of A single and"A1+A2"in functioning as attributes and predicate, providing data support for the following analysis.The structural analysis is conducted toward"A1+A2"in the third chapter. We conclude that"A1+A2"have two forms, a simple linear combination and a complicated integration. Furthermore, we discuss on the mutual selectivity of A1 and A2 as well as the order of the group, providing an assumption of the Cognitive Model of"A1+A2."In the forth chapter, we explain the reason for the co-existence of single and double syllables in"A1+A2."The appearance of doubl syllables is inevitable under the restriction of four systems, while in the same circumstance the single syllable is co-existing for that single syllable form is frequently used and has different function with the double -syllable form.Chapter five summarizes the main points of the paper , and points out the direction for further research.
