As a distinctive and unique grotesque novelist, Edgar Allan Poe had left later generation infinite space for imagination and research for his struggling miserable life and mysterious works. He was also one of the hottest topics for later literature critics and researchers. As a masterpiece of Allan Poe's grotesque works, The Fall of the House of Usher has long been a hot topic for those researchers. Generally speaking, researches about this work can be classified into the following three types:To analyze according to traditional literature analytical methods, taking into account the periodical and cultural background; to explain the whole process as the spiritual travel of the chronically depressed and confused author with the help of Freud's psychoanalysis; to emphasize on the heroine Madeline and classify it into feminism work. This thesis views the The Fall of the House of Usher from a new perspective---Freud's literary creation theory. Theories used in this thesis include both Freud's most famous triple personality structure theory and his literary creation theory based on psychoanalysis. As to the literary creation theory based on psychoanalysis, Freud believes that each literary work produced must have close relation with the author's life experience and every detail portrays the actual life and spiritual state of the author. Firstly, Freud believes that literary creation is the fulfillment of the depressed desires; secondly, Freud believes that the motive forces for phantasies are unsatisfied wishes and every single phantasy is the fulfillment of wish, a correction of unsatisfying reality. A strong experience in the present awakens a memory of an earlier experience (usually belonging to his childhood) from which there now proceeds a wish which finds its fulfillment in the creative work. This thesis aims to explore the reason for the creation of such a mysterious grotesque novel with the help of Freud's literary creation theory and triple personality theory. There are countless relations between this classical work and Allan Poe's unusual life experience, the creation idea he held and the historical background he was in at that time. Roderick's strange behaviors and what the narrator saw and heard all transmit messages of the author, such as his chronically depressed unconscious, misfortunes he had confronted in his life, so on and so forth. All of these may even remain undiscovered for the author. But it is not difficult for us to find points of agreement if we make a deep research and compare the work to the author's miserable life. Therefore we can find out where the exotic flower has been gestated from.
