With a short history of two to three decades in China, great achievement has already been made in the area of multimedia computer assisted language learning (MCALL) both in terms of theoretical, practical research and courseware development as well. However, the benefits of MCALL exerted in college English teaching were rather limited, which leads to the question: what is the current situation of MCALL practice in colleges now? What are the teachers and students'attitude towards the current college English teaching? Unless with a clear picture in one's mind, no one can make appropriate policies or strategies to better promote the advancement of MCALL research & practice and enhance the teaching quality.Constructivism is the further development of learning theory after behaviorism and cognitivism and it is regarded as a great innovation of current teaching theory. With the development of information technology, especially, that of the multimedia and Network Communications technology, the MCALL has been popularly applied to second language teaching, which provokes profound changes in teaching theories, teaching methodology, and multimedia design, etc.Based on teaching practice, questionnaire and interview, this paper discusses and analyzes the current college English teaching in multimedia situation with regard to teachers and students. With related theories and faced with main problems, the author puts forward with the study case:"multimedia aided college English teaching with the guidance of constructivism teaching mode". During the teaching practice, the author brings forward the strategies of applying multimedia in English teaching and demonstrates their practical use in the sample teaching of a unit from'New College English'and its listening material. The author also evaluates the strategies through questionnaire, interview and presentation of students'achievements. All the related results are positive. Therefore, it can be concluded that the proposed teaching strategies can surely improve the abilities of the students and achieve better teaching goals. From this study, we can find that MCALL shows some characteristics constructivism has. It will boost college English teaching by using these characteristics and it will improve the students'English competency. The study provides an outlook for college English teachers to better improve their teaching efficiency as well as teaching quality of MCALL.
