| In 5.12 2008, a massive earthquake hit Sichuan province. All kinds of media started comprehensive coverage of the struck area. The quake-hit region drew the concern of people of the whole country and the world. Though some cultural relics and the related cultural activities were severely damaged, they also received some positive effects from the overwhelming news reports because of the earthquake.Mianzhu, a city in northwestern Sichuan Basin, was one of the most serious damaged cities. The disaster not only affected people in the quake-hit region, but also threatened the distinguished local cultural relics. Mianzhu New Year Picture, which had been included on the list of National Cultural Heritages in June 2006, was also damaged by this natural hazard. Museums, factories, and other infrastructure facilities of Mianzhu New Year Picture were damaged and even destroyed. Although the disaster caused a lot of casualties and property losses, it also brought great economic, social and cultural effects. After the earthquake, as one of the national top ten hard-hit areas, Mianzhu City had received unprecedented attention, Mianzhu folk art-Mianzhu New Year Picture also attracted unprecedented attention. Today, it has been more than two years since the devastating earthquake happened. Manzhu New Year Picture didn't disappear or downsize. It have invigorated from the disaster, just like a rebirth. The power of communication and the power of images are among the reasons of the rebirth. Communication, as the most complex subject of humanities and social sciences, just has a short history of several decades. However, as a social phenomenon, it is synchronized with human society. Text and images are two main subjects of communication research. They have great influence on the society. Today, we entered the times of picture reading. Images have greater influence than text. Moreover, Mianzhu New Year picture as a Chinese painting, it has always been a kind of visual presentation. Communication effectiveness of it is even greater. Faced with such a large catastrophic event, Mianzhu New Year Picture are more worthy of our attention as a communication research subject.In China, it is still in its infancy that how catastrophic events influence a form of images. It needs further academic study. Based on this consideration, this Master's thesis attempts to analyze the writing of images of the earthquake and how they influenced the form of Mianzhu New Year Picture, its industry and culture. In order to draw reliable conclusions, the writer also conducted a comprehensive field survey. By getting a comprehensive understanding of Mianzhu New Year Picture, and comparing the observed result with the reality, this thesis tries to analyze the relationship between the observed images and existing texts of images.
