Study On The Thailand Students' Chinese Reading Strategies

Reading is one of the most important ways for people to get information in their study and work. Take international students studying in China as an example, reading is an effective way to improve their Chinese level. This paper constructed a scale of the learning strategies with reliability and validity, in order to study the relationship between the use of reading strategies and age difference, gender gap, Chinese descendant or not of Thailand students. We have known the effective strategies for Thailand students and the Chinese Cultural Circle countries'students to read Chinese articles. Besides, based on the investigation, this paper suggested some strategy-training methods, in order to help Thailand students to improve their standers of Chinese reading with those useful strategies.Based on Oxford's theory and international students'real conditions, this paper formulated a questionnaire with 35 questions on reading strategies. Then we made an analysis of the data by SPSS17.0.The results show that Thailand students are good at using language learning strategies and language using strategies, and they tend to use strategies such as consulting reference-books, native language phrases, inquiring, creating learning environment to help them to understand chapters. They don't often use management strategy, not good at making plans and goals, forecasting, self-monitoring, adjustment and assessment of strategy, which directly affects their reading comprehension and reading speed. They also have some bad reading habits, such as the heart reading, audio reading, use their native language and so on.Besides, girls are good at using prediction and marking, while boys paying less attention to them. High level students still have those bad habits when they read Chinese articles, but they are much better than low level students.In addition, for Thailand students, guessing, enquiring, creating learning environment and prediction are useful strategies, while consulting reference book and using native language are bad for their reading. They should improve strategies, such as making plans and goals, appraisal, encouragement, communication and so on in their further study.The results also show that there are differences on language using strategies between boys and girls, low level students and high level students. Girls and the low level students are better at using language using strategies than boys and the high level students. Besides, most Thailand students put emphasis on speaking and listening, but ignoring reading and writing.This paper studied reading strategies when Thailand students read Chinese and pointed out the emphasis to strategy training and certain training methods, which is based on the previous research, hoping to fill in the gaps of TCFL.
