Research On Science Fiction Coinaged Words And Expressions Translation

This dissertation focuses on Li Keqin's translation of the science fiction novel-A Fire upon the Deep. Through examining Li Keqin's principle in dealing with science fiction coinages of words and expression, it summarizes Li's translation methods and discusses his translation version's guidance value to the translation of science fiction novels.The author starts from a brief review of science fiction and science fiction translation both abroad and at home, indicating the phenomenon that the specialized research focusing on science fiction translation is very limited in China at present, which shows the necessity of science fiction translation. Then this dissertation summarizes the theories and criteria on science fiction translation which are proposed by Prof. Guo Jianzhong in his book, providing theoretical foundation of the following case study. And then the author lists the reasons why she chooses A Fire upon the Deep for the case study. It is because the novel is a typical hard science fiction. And it includes a lot of science fictional coinages and expressions, which are the translation pitfalls of science fiction. And the success of Li Keqin's translation version adds study value to this novel.Base on the analysis of Li Keqin's translation version, this dissertation goes on to explore Li Keqin's translation principles. Through the analysis, the author finds out that Li Keqin tends to apply the strategy of domesticating translation when dealing with specific fictional coinages and expressions. And when he does contextual translation, his version accords with Prof. Guo's three criteria of science fiction translation. For the purpose of pursuing an definitely smooth translation version, Li Keqin adopts the translation strategy of "literal/free translation+foreignizing transaltion" managing to reach a fluent translation version which retains the "alien culture" in its original text completely.Finally, this dissertation proposes some translation approaches to science fiction translators under the guidance of Li Keqin's successful translation of A Fire upon the Deep.
