As an important concept of narratology, unreliable narration has been playing a significant role in the research of novels and other fields. Rhetorical and cognitive are two important approaches of analyzing this category. This paper mainly studies the two post-classic novels, Lolita and The Catcher in the Rye, using the related concepts of unreliable narration, which contain unreliable narrator, implied author, point of view, reader and structural irony by jointing the rhetorical and cognitive approaches together. It seeks to give an implicit explanation to the relationship between unreliable narration and the related elements, in order to help readers have a better understanding of the two novels.First of all, this paper gives a brief introduction to the study background of unreliable narration during the recent years and its relationship with other related terms. Secondly, it makes an effort to explore literary features of two novels by way of using the terms of unreliable narrator, implied author, point of view and structural irony in order to help readers get a further comprehension of these two novels. Finally, the concluding part discusses the particular intertextual features existed in the two novels.
