Distance Confusion In Daphne Du Maurier's Novels

As a representative writer of the 20 th century under the wave of “Writers exited”,Daphne Du Maurier's novels have an obvious feature named "The writer does not speak".Without the control of the writer,readers grasp the purpose of the article only by relying on the sight of the narrators in the novels,and because of the loss of the Daphne Du Maurier's guidance,it was difficult for readers to determine whether the narrator was a reliable narrator or not,and thus making it difficult for them to determine whether the narrator is the true representative of the implied author or not.In this case,the readers will have difficulty in grasping the “distance”between the narrators and themselves and the “distance” between the narrators and the implied authors,and it will also be difficult to grasp the “distance” between the implied author and themselves,thus leading to distance confusion,which will make multiple interpretations of the same text eventually,i.e multiple interpretations of the same text resulting from "distance confusion".This article attempts to jump out of the limitations of a single novel by using a overall view of Daphne Du Maurier's different creations,and try to use Wayne C.Booth's theory of “distance” to sum up the “distance confusions” produced in her novels.Then this article will list the reasons why Daphne Du Maurier's novels have this feature from three aspects: social factors,writing habits,and her own factors.In the end of the article,the influences of this unique feature of Daphne's novels will be shown on the view of the readers.
