The study of this thesis in on the semantic orientation of the complement of Verb Resultative Compounds in Modern Chinese. The Verb Resultative Compounds in Modern Chinese is kind of compact expression of the complex derived event, in which the semantic orientation of the complements are diverse and difficult to distinguish. The development of ontology research and information processing call for the criterion of semantic orientation of the complement of verb resultative compounds in Modern Chinese. This thesis is based on the real text corpus such as "Database of the usage of the Verb Resultative Compounds in Modern Chinese" and the results of the survery, and have made a detailed study on the semantic orientation of the resultative complements. Now we have got some conclusions as follows:First of all, the scope of the semantic orientation of the resultative complements are not limited to the verbs or entities, but also the concept of abstract relations or attributes, which may not appear in the surface syntactic structure.Second, the resultative complements may point to one or more components semanticly.Third, this thesis has re-definitioned the extension and intension of the concept "the semantic orientation of the resultative complement is the verb".Fourth, this thesis has made a summary on the typies of the semantic orientation of the resultative complements.Fifth, proposed the criterion of semantic orientation of the complement of verb resultative compounds, and verified it.The results of this thesis could help to present the complete picture of the conditions of the semantic orientation of resultative complements, and provide the basis for people and the computer to distinguish them.
