On Zhang Ailing's Response To Lu Xun's May 4th Literary Tradition

"May 4th New Cultural Movement" didn't bring about a complete ideological system.Although every sponsor took the same attitudes on criticism and doubts of traditional culture of China,their understanding of "science"and "democracy"were diffirent;significant differences existed in "enlightenment view" they adhered to;they did't have a unified standard when evaluating all value again.They took part in the "May 4th" New Cultural Movement according to their own understanding of it,which stamped the movement with personal branding.In this way the movement formed its own tradition.Lu Xun,the author who had obtained actual performance, had interpreted this grandeur movement in his writings according to his own understanding.Thus "Lu Xun's Traditional Literay Tradition of May 4th" came into being.In short, "Lu Xun's Literary Tradition " is the small tradition contrast to the big tradition of literature during May 4th period,and it makes complementation with other sponsors'literatures to form the whole literary tradition during May 4th period.In the view of Lu Xun, literature stands for free psychic position and independent action power. His definition of literature based on the literature itself but not sticked to the literature only.It is obvious that Lu Xun's May 4th Literary Tradition is a sober and independent intellectual's tradition and it contributes to construction of Chinese New Literature with groundbreaking senses.However,it's a pity that such tradition has not been handed down after he died.In the roaring 1940's, "Lu Xun's May 4th Literary Tradition " was almost cut by politics.In the liberated areas,because of the Affair of Wang Shiwei, Lu Xun's essay tradition of May 4th came down.Of course this phenomenon was not limited to the liberated areas, and the areas ruled by Guomin Party also could not escape from the fate of decline.There was a "Speech hot" in the areas ruled by Guomin Party after Mao's Speech was conveyed there.Many writers put their previous stance down in writing and threw themselves into the war propaganda,then art became a tool to spread politics. Lu Xun's May 4th Literary Tradition,exposing the dark,criticizing the reality and pursing individual emancipation and independent pensonality,was ignored by the time.It's just like "salvation overwhelmed enlightenment" in the Double Variation of Enlightenment and Salvation by Mr. Li Zehou.At the time of despair,we found the aloof goddess-Zhang Ailing, with a solemn and lonely pen in her hand,as we put our attention to the occupied areas of 1940's.Her Rumor inherited Lu Xun's essay tradition in "May 4th movement" and she was absorbed in writing the criticism of civilization and social criticism,which was expected by Lu Xun.Her Legend,writeen objectively about "female life" and "female humanity",continued Lu Xun's thought about women liberation.Zhang Ailing lacks fighting spirit like Lu Xun's,has no heat or force like Lu Xun's.Her works is always about safe lives in multiple comparison.There is not tragic of Lu Xun's style in her writing,but more human desolation.
