A Memetic Study Of Language Memes In The Sitcom My Own Swordsman

Memetics is a new theory to interpret cultural evolution. which is based on Darwin's evolution theory. It holds that meme is a unit of cultural information, and languages, cultural customs. ideas, and social behaviors that can be replicated and transmitted continuously are all memes. As a cultural gene, meme exists through replication and transmission, and language is a carrying vehicle. The language development benefits from memes and memes themselves achieve replication and transmission through language. They have close relationship.In modern society, the fast rhythm of modern life and great work pressure make people long for some humorous entertainments to relax themselves. The sitcom My Own Swordsman caters for such entertainment pursuit of people, and gains great success due to its humorous plots and distinctive language styles.This thesis aims to analyze the language memes in the sitcom My Own Swordsman from the memetic point of view. In it, the language memes in the sitcom My Own Swordsman are classified into several types, and are analyzed with the selection criteria for memes and the adaptation theory, demonstrating the reasons for the success of the language memes in it and that successful language memes can adapt to language use and communicative needs.Although it is not the first thesis to apply the memetic theory to explain language phenomena, it is the first time to analyze the sitcom from the memetic perspective. It is hoped that this thesis can offer some insight to the audience of how to appreciate the lines in the sitcom, and provide some constructive suggestions for the sitcom playwrights to create better lines and last I hope that I can do a little of my own power for the long-term development of the sitcom in China.
