Study Of Subtitle Translation Of TV Play Series Genghis Khan From The Perspective Of Relevance Theory

With the rapid development of the export of Chinese TV plays to English-speaking countries, it opens a new way for cultural exchange. Due to the different cultural backgrounds, subtitle translation, as reappearance of TV play content and cultural information, plays a more and more important role in translation study. In order to be accepted by the overseas market, the translation of subtitle in Chinese TV play series must reach high standards.Relevance theory is a new perspective of analysis of subtitle translation with powerful explanatory strengths. Form the point of relevance theory, translation is a dynamic referential process based on the dynamic context according to relevance. This thesis focuses on subtitle translation under the theoretical framework of relevance theory with analysis of TV play series Genghis Khan. TV play series Genghis Khan is one of the most excellent exported cultural products of Chinese TV play series, and the protagonist Genghis Khan is a world-famous historical figure.Cultural specific items are notable for subtitle translation and likely to cause communication difficulties for subtitle translators with the constraints of space and time. The present research from the perspective of relevance theory and translation theory of Gutt, focuses on subtitle translation of cultural specific items with the case of TV play series Genghis Khan. With analysis of the examples of the subtitle in Genghis Khan, the relevant relations of the TV play series subtitle version and the translated subtitle text are refined as hyponymy relevance, image-equivalent relevance and function-equivalent relevance to explain subtitle translation as an operating system. On the basis of research, this thesis suggests effective and feasible translation strategies for successful expression of cultural specific items to deal with the problem of the cultural specific items.
