Transitivity Analysis Of The Mongolian Sports News Discourse In Inner Mongolia Daily (Mongolian Version)

In recent years, with further application of Halliday's functional grammar into a variety of fields of social science, the goal of the discourse analysis has more concentrated on the positive impact on society through analyzing language. Transitivity analysis of the discourse began in early 1970s. The transitivity analysis has been used for various types of discourse including the sports news discourse. This dissertation, therefore, attempts to apply transitivity analysis into the Mongolian sports news discourse from the perspective of Systemic Functional Grammar (SFG).Based on a review of previous studies on the sports news discourse and the transitivity theory, this dissertation carries out a quantitative and qualitative study of the Mongolian sports news discourse so as to fulfill the transitivity features and reveal the function of each process type. This study selects ten pieces of sports news discourses from Inner Mongolia Daily (Mongolian version) as the data and makes classification and comparison. Then the research results are displayed by tables, which show its transitivity features more directly.Detailed studies on this dissertation show the following findings. Four process types among the six process types regularly occur in the Mongolian sports news discourse, in which the material process appears most frequently. The supposed three main participants are the sportsman or the coach, the sports team or the sports delegation and the government. In the analysis, the sportsman or the coach and the sports team or the sports delegation most highly serve as main participant as the subject in the clause in different process types. Moreover, the function of each process type in the Mongolian sports news discourse is revealed along with the analysis.Findings of the study may provide both practical and theoretical implications. On the one hand, the findings of the study make contribution to the research of the transitivity in Mongolian language to some extent. On the other hand, this study also sheds some light on the future studies on other linguistic phenomena from the perspective of transitivity.
