Critical Discourse Analysis, abbreviated as CDA, is a branch of linguistics. It is a method of discourse analysis developed by the Fowler Roger and Kress as the representative of Western linguists, which is also known as critical linguistics, critical language studies and linguistic criticism. Its methodology is based on Halliday’s systemic functional linguistics, which is defined as a discourse analysis tool for the study of social and political discourse, and it reveals the relationship between language and ideology from the aspects of linguistics, psychology and so on. The main research subjects include news reports, political speeches and official discourses. The major task of critical discourse analysis is to analyze written or oral materials to reveal the existence of power, inequality and tendency. It also reveals how the discourse exists and regenerates in a particular social, political and historical context. In 2015, after The Eighteenth National Congress of the CPC, the anti-corruption storm came to the third year. In opinion of the public, the downfall of officials is no longer a fresh topic, but the anti-corruption news is still the most eye-catching headline. China’s anti-corruption in2015 can be viewed as a breakthrough, which has received extensively domestic and international attention such as hunting for the “tigers”, after NPC and CPPCC, the downfall of provincial Party Secretary and governor officials, and then the inspection team moved into financial institutions, and a wave of anti-corruption set off in the state-owned enterprises, and many fugitives have been man-hunted from abroad and a plenty of regulations have been completely overhauled. China Daily as a window for the world to understand China is the first choice for high-end people at home and abroad. It is a Chinese newspaper with higher reprint rate by foreign media and it is more authoritative. Therefore, anti-corruption news reports in China Daily have been selected as discourse to be analyzed in this thesis. This study aims to answer the following research questions:(1) What are the occurrence and distribution of transitivity about the anti-corruption in the news reports on China Daily?(2) In the view of the content, what is the realization of the transitivity in the news reports about anti-corruption?(3)What ideology can be revealed in the news reports about anti-corruption from China Daily? The quantitative method and the qualitative method are employed in this thesis.Quantitative analysis, which aims to make a statistical analysis, is the analysis of quantitative characteristics, quantitative relationships and quantitative changes. In this thesis, thecharacteristics of the distribution and the frequency of process types are analyzed by the quantitative analysis. At the same time, the qualitative method is performed on the quality of the object, specifically using induction and deduction, analysis and synthesis as well as abstraction, generalization and other methods to obtain a variety of material data in order to understand the essence of things and reveal the inherent law. In this thesis, the qualitative method is adopted to make transitivity analysis to the selected news reports, in order to reveal the hidden ideology behind the language, the Chinese government’s attitude towards corruption and the determination of the Chinese government’s anti-corruption.This thesis is composed of five chapters. The first chapter mainly introduces the research background, purpose and significance of this study and the layout of the thesis. The second chapter is the theoretical foundation, which is composed of four parts. The first part introduces the theoretical basis, namely critical discourse analysis, including the development and key concepts of CDA. The second part introduces the systemic functional linguistics as an analytical tool and its research status at home and abroad; the third part is a brief introduction to the news discourse; the fourth part makes a brief analysis of the Fairclough’s Three-dimensional Framework. The third chapter describes the research questions, research methodology, research process and data collection. The fourth chapter is the focus of this thesis, the hidden ideology behind the news will be discovered through the transitivity analysis of the discourse. The last chapter mainly summarizes the main findings of this thesis, and it concerns with the limitations of this study and the direction of future research. The 20 pieces of news reports used in research are all selected from China Daily, and the research steps are as follows: firstly, the number of the clauses in the selected 20 pieces of news reports will be calculated; secondly, each process involved in each clause as well as their occurrence and distribution will be figured out and listed in the table; at last, according to the characteristics of distribution and occurrence of different process, the results will be given.Through the analysis of the distribution and function of the process of the 20 news reports, the significant linguistic features of the news report will be explained from different angles such as the Chinese government, government officials, corrupt officials and the public. The research is to explore the ideology and attitudes of people involved towards China’s anti-corruption action. It can be seen from the analysis that the Chinese government and people show zero tolerance attitudes towards corruption, and the public is in favor of the Chinese government’s anticorruption action. Corrupt officials under investigation show the regret and remorse; government officials sniff at corruption.
