Construction Of Main Female Images In Lin Shu's Translation Of Joan Haste

As a brilliant translator in Chinese translation history, Lin Shu has produced a great number of translated works. Among these works, he has made great achievements in his translation of love stories and also earned his fame. His translated love stories like La Dame Aux Camelias and Joan Haste enjoyed great success and popularity at that time, and the distinctive female images in these works left a deep impression. Thus by taking Joan Haste as an example, this thesis has studied Lin Shu's construction of the love story's main females'images from the perspective of Imagologie.Theory of Imagologie in Comparative Literature study is a research on the construction or representation of foreign countries'images in domestic literatures. As a domestic translator, when Lin Shu observes and translates the foreign female images of Joan Haste, he also constructs images for these females in his translated version. Thus in this thesis the construction of female images has been viewed in Imagologie and been analyzed with the concepts of"the observer"and"social collective imagination"in Imagologie. From the perspective of"the observer", Lin Shu's construction of foreign females'images has been analyzed in his traditional thoughts of morality and affection. While from the perspective of"social collective imagination", this construction has been studied in the aspects of the commonly recognized female images, the new social thoughts and the readers'reception and expectation at that time.On the practical level this thesis has adopted a descriptive approach with the method of"inner study of text"in Imagologie. It has especially examined the text closely and focused on analysis of language construction of these female images. Through the analysis of females'appearance and characters, their concepts of gender, affection and marriage, and their social status, a complete picture of females'images constructed by Lin Shu has been presented. In fact his construction or imagination is also a cultural rewriting of the original females'images. It is in accordance with classical female images at that time and reflects time and social influence.
