On Translation Of Political Text

With the development of globalization, political document translation plays an indispensable role in China's publicity affairs. However, the political document translation is largely undertaken by the authoritative organizations controlled by the Government, due to its requirement of exactness and translator's high sensitivity to political situation. Therefore, translations and its relevant research in political field are not considered as important as those in other fields. Despite many achievements and progress within the latest decade, studies on the political document translation still lag far behind those on culture and literature. Meanwhile, studies on the political document translation are for the most part engaged in the translation standards, problems and skills, and barely deals with its deeper values for research and reference in accordance with theories. In a word, it's indispensible to deepen and systematize the studies on political document translation for better broadening the research scope as well as enriching the relevant materials on political translation research.The functional stylistics as a contemporary linguistic theory provides a new view on and a fresh approach to stylistic analysis which is an indispensable step before translating. Since many scholars have made conspicuous studies on the literary languages by means of the functional stylistics, it is also valid and meaningful to apply the theory to the analysis of political text,which is beneficial to the political text translating. The functional stylistics which includes functional perspective, multi-leveled theory and context theory could explain not only the language of the text, but also the cultural and social factors influencing the text. And furthermore, the overall consideration of language, function and style would deepen the understanding of political text and then, overcome the traditional style analysis and literal translation.The thesis is based upon the three meta-functions and context theory of functional stylistics and takes both the source and the target texts of the Report as the political text for language and style research. All the examples illustrated in the thesis are devoted to reproducing the context of the Report, and then displaying the formality, authority and exactness of both the source and target texts of the Report.Above all, the thesis is designed to stress the guidance and importance to which the functional stylistics has contributed, through the employment of the both texts of the Report. The examples in the thesis which are cited from the Report not only display the characteristics of the political text, but also demonstrate that functional stylistics is also valid and applicable to the analysis of the political text. The thesis is an active exploration not only for research inspirations, but also for drawing more attentions from the translation scholars to devote to the political document translation field.
