Urban Romance in China is an important topic of contemporary novel. As themost outstanding authors in this field, Yi Shu, Zhang Xiaoxian and Baby Annehave produced a number of works which can represent the style of urban romanceat present. The similarity of these works is "awareness of self-pity"(AS) whichemerges in the text. Awareness of self-pity is an emotional desire. People with thisawareness thrive to to be understood, cared and cherished to meet their emotionalneeds in the life."self"in the AS implies when love is difficult to obtain fromothers, individuals could turn around to examine the highlight on themselves whichwould lead to the imaginary love with"self". Currently, galloping life styleimposes tremendous pressure on people, which drives them eager to get love. Thequest for love is not always a plain sailing for them, so AS gradually becomes aconvenient emotional tool to satisfy this eagerness and build up the imaginary lovewith self, while this self-satisfaction helps make up the lacks in the emotional lifeand results to self-approval and reasonable decompression. Urban self-pity inromantic novels can be divided into three patterns: love-based self-pity,society-wide emotionless self-pity and family-based self-pity; There are fivewritten expression: self-pity to the mirror, view-based recalling, hypothesizedscenarios, comparison with others, and mood creation. Zhang Xiaoxian, Yi Shu,and Anne baby have different tendencies to apply these expressions. ZhangXiaoxian is used to portray the female AS from the God's perspective and relatethis awareness to characters'emotional ups and downs and unpredictable fate.Baby Annie's novel is shrouded by an atmosphere of self-pity. Author's andcharacters'self-pity, arouses the readers'same feelings. Compared with the abovetwo authors, Yi Shu attempts to set her novels as a beacon which can guide readersto find self-love and self-reliance and treasure the moment of happiness, which is asublimation of AS.The expression of AS in the literature is significant. For a start, it is a commonhuman emotion, the embodiment of individual life value and the understandingabout pathways to evaluate self. Secondly, AS stands on a variety of social functions, including the aesthetic function, cognitive function, entertainment, educational functions, functions of society organizations and adjustment; Thirdly,AS acts as the enlightenment the novel dimension, content and emotionalexpression This awareness can readily enrich emotional expression in the femalenovels and connect the plots naturally; In addition, As inspires the real modern life.In my thesis, based on analysis of positive and negative effects from AS, theadvocated attitude to confront it is to protect and take pity on self, because theultimate goal of self-pity is not endless complaining, but the rational pity on selfwhich will finally switch to an aid to reach the grown-up self-approval.
